Joomla 1.6 Development Update

Earlier this year, Joomla 1.6 was released to the public. Even before the release, I have been evaluating the 1.6 platform for suitability of development. At this time, there are no plans to write any extensions for Joomla 1.6 as the code base has proven to be insecure, inconsistent, and very buggy. At this time, it would appear that Joomla 1.6 was not ready to leave beta. While some great new features were introduced, inconsistent implementations and problems with the core make writing extensions very difficult. This is further complicated by the Joomla core team decision to release new iterations on a regular basis, which may result it software becoming obsolete or incompatible much too soon. It is unclear how much of the Joomla user base will upgrade to 1.6 or beyond or stick with the stable Joomla 1.5. As a developer, this makes it very difficult to undertake any substantial development on either 1.5 or 1.6 as the possible market opportunity and audience is unknown. For now, it looks like we will have to wait until this "Vista"-esque version of Joomla is superseded. I hope that soon there will be a clear roadmap for my development efforts, in the meantime, I will continue to support my existing extensions that are for sale in the Web Design Hero store, but you should not expect 1.6 version of this software to be released any time soon. Thank you for your continued patronage, and as always feel free to contact me via the WDH Ticket System.

I am proud to announce that my new extension JURL Shortener has just been added to the Joomla Extension Directory. This component brings new, innovative functionality to the Joomla platform, letting you easily market your website and increase your return on investment in social media. JURL Shortener allows you to create short URLs using your own domain name, so that you can easily share links for any page on the web. Now, you can share links with your visitors, track popularity and influence, and better utilize the limited space available on text messages (SMS) and on services like Twitter. Click here to learn more about JURL Shortener and also check out the demo here.

JoomlaDate for J!1.5

For a very long time, people have been asking me when the next iteration of JoomlaDate, the Joomla! dating and social networking solution will be coming out. While I was very happy with the simplicity and functionality in JoomlaDate for Joomla! 1.0, there are many reasons I did not do a direct port or try to make it run in Legacy Mode. I wanted to make a much more flexible system. Customers gave me all sorts of whacky requests and wanted me to craft some very interesting customizations. The framework for JoomlaDate only really worked for dating. For well over a year I was planning out the theory behind the next iteration of JoomlaDate. To build a more flexible system required developing new techniques and algorithms to improve searching, profile generation, and many other features that would create a next generation framework instead of just a new component. This past summer I had some free time to play around and implement these new ideas.

Unfortunately, these ideas turned out to be way too complex to implement, which means trouble for you the site administrator and your users. I have begun efforts to simplify the new framework while delivering a unique and easy-to-adapt component. I really hope to get more free time to work on this and test out the new ideas.

Paying by e-Check?
Written by Eric Goldman

I have been talking with a few customers, and it seems there is some confusion about using e-Checks through PayPal. When you use an e-Check, it is not an instantaneous transaction as if you used a credit card. If you need your software immediately, you should purchase with a credit card (does not even require a PayPal account). You are of course still free to use an e-Check if you prefer, but you will not receive your download links until after the Payment has cleared. e-Checks must be processed as a normal paper check would, and may take a few days (four on average) to clear with your bank. However, once your e-Check payment clears, PayPal will instantly notify the sales system and your download information will be emailed to you. I hope this clears up any confusion, but as always feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I have just submitted Total RSS to the Joomla Extension Directory (http://extensions.joomla.org). This will be the first test of our new online store. The initial beta with a few testers went okay, but please do not expect a polished experience yet. This new store model was designed to make information easier to access and to make purchasing quicker. Please do not hesitate to contact me, as I want to make sure everything works great for everyone. I always look forward to questions and doing business with new customers. If you loved Author RSS for 1.0.XX, you will really love Total RSS for 1.5.XX! Thanks for browsing and I hope you enjoy. Contact me here. Check our Total RSS by clicking here.

To all my new customers, thanks for checking out the store. For all my past customers, thank you for checking out my new product. I know some of you have been waiting too long.
